The world’s most popular domestic storage battery gets an upgrade this month, with the launch of the highly-anticipated Tesla Powerwall 3.
Available for order on 19 June and delivering from October, the new Powerwall has several advantages over its predecessor, including higher power output – enabling you to power more appliances in the event of a power outage.
So what can you expect by switching to Tesla’s latest product?
More powerful and compact than its predecessor, Powerwall 3 is a home battery system that converts your home’s solar panels into an all-day resource, reducing bills and improving solar functionality by optimising your home’s consumption of the energy being generated by your solar panels. It also offers backup functionality in the event of load-shedding or scheduled outages.
This market-leading technology comes in a smart, modern design and takes up less space than other home battery systems. The unit is no longer water-cooled, instead using forced air through a top-mounted fan with venting at the rear.
The Tesla Powerwall 3 is weather-proof and can be installed inside or outside your home. The unit has been built in such a way that it is resistant to flooding up to a depth of 600mm and comes with an optional feature – Storm Watch – that will fully charge the batteries in the event of weather that risks a power outage.
Up to four Powerwall 3s can be linked together for those with greater power requirements, creating a total capacity of 54 kWh.
How is this an improvement on Powerwall 2?
The short answer is improved power output. Where the Tesla Powerwall 2 was able to produce a continuous 5kW peaking at 7kW, the new model will generate double that: 11.5kW of power, both for grid and backup, for an unlimited number of cycles. This means you can use it to run more devices and appliances, reducing disruption in the event of a power outage. It also affords you greater choice over the technology that you choose to power with your unit.
Powerwall 3 offers the same 13.5kWh storage capacity as its predecessor while reducing its size and running costs; it no longer requires a separate inverter, for example.
How will this launch affect existing Powerwall 2 customers?
The new Powerwall has been in development for three years, but the Powerwall 2 remains a good value battery and well priced compared to its competitors.
Both batteries have the same 13.5 kWh capacity and are covered by the same 10-year warranty, but due to design and the increased power output of Powerwall 3, the two models cannot be installed side-by-side. Those of you seeking a capacity upgrade for your battery storage will need to stick with Powerwall 2 when expanding your system and up to ten Powerwall 2 units can be stacked together.
Tesla’s Powerwall 2 technology remains sufficient to power the majority of homes in the evening using stored daytime solar electricity, and multiple batteries can be used in the event your home has greater energy needs.
Price and procurement
After shipping and installation fees, the new model will cost slightly more than the Powerwall 2 unit, due in part to the fact it no longer requires a separate solar inverter. But other than installation there will be no other costs. All connectivity with the unit takes place directly through the widely used Tesla One app.
